2008 São Paulo Auto Show: Fiat Bugster by a Less Interesting Name

SÃO PAULO, Brazil — The name Bugster was intriguing — but Fiat went for a simpler name for its new concept. The FCC II, which stands for Fiat Concept Car, was unveiled at the 2008 São Paulo Auto Show. The concept that almost took the name Bugster (a mix of buggy and roadster) is the second design from the project center the Italian company recently set up in Betim, Brazil. The first was conceived and shown in 2006 at the auto shows in both São Paulo and Bologna. According to Fiat, the FCC II is 'a research laboratory looking for new technologies, the starting point for adoption of new mobility solutions with alternative, reusable and non-polluting materials.'The FCC II uses a purpose-built electric engine, rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and a Dualogic transmission — the same as the one on the new Fiat Linea and Stilo. The car has a range of 60 miles on the engine's power. The concept's bodywork was produced with natural fibers from renewable sources worked by nanotechnology. The hood, for instance, was produced with composite materials using 'nanoclay.' Thirty percent of the seat foam is made from recycled soy oil — a technique used in all Brazilian Fiats. The FCC II is short and light, weighing only 2,160 pounds, and in appearance it's more 'buggy' than 'roadster.' As Inside Line had predicted, the FCC II has the Locker appearance package, which includes graphics. Locker is Fiat's label that appeals to young and adventurous segments of the market.Inside Line says: Fiat claims the design of the FCC II is 'futuristic,' but we would label it as 'creative' instead, meaning that as a compliment. — Rodolpho Siqueira, Correspondent
