Metaldyne wins contract with Chery Automobile Co., Ltd.

The Mich.-based Metaldyne, an Asahi Tec company, recently won a contract to supply key powertrain and chassis components to China's Chery Automobile Co., Ltd. This will support future vehicles produced by Chery, and come on the heels after the official opening of Metaldyne's first manufacturing facility in Suzhou last year.

"We are very excited about this opportunity to bring our advanced manufacturing techniques to China's fastest growing auto company," says Jim Hudak, Metaldyne's vice president, sales and engineering, Asia Pacific. "Our expansion into China with our new Suzhou facility provides us with a tremendous opportunity to capitalize on the extensive growth in that region. We are well- positioned across a broad range of our product portfolio to supply quality products to the China vehicle market, which is expected to top 8 million vehicles this year."

Metaldyne designs products using unique processes and materials providing significant weight and performance enhancements to its customers. Since many of the processes needed to manufacture these designs are not common in China, Chery has embraced this opportunity to develop key vehicle components with Metaldyne including suspension components, oil pumps and powdered metal forged connecting rods.

Metaldyne invested $18 million in the Suzhou project and expects revenues of more than $100 million when the plant reaches full capacity. The Suzhou facility currently has about 95 employees. At full capacity, it will employ 350-400 people.

Since January 2007, Asahi Tec has booked more than $1 billion in new powertrain and chassis business wins from its Asian, European and North American customers. These awards are based on the expected length of agreements and the annual business revenue.
