Global carmakers fighting in China sedan market
Although Japanese automakers were behind European and US automobile giants in their foray into the Chinese market, they have paid more attention to profits from medium- and high-grade sedans.
Accord of Guangzhou Honda Automobile Co., Ltd., Camry of Guangzhou Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. and Teana of Dongfeng Nissan Passenger Vehicle Company have been leading the market in terms of sales.
The performance of European and US brands are inferior. The medium- and high-grade sedans produced by European carmakers include Magotan of FAW-VW Automobile Co., Ltd. and Passat Lingyu of Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive Co., Ltd.
Those made by US auto giants are represented by Buick Regal and Buick LaCrosse of Shanghai General Motors Co. Ltd. (Shanghai GM) and Mondeo Zetec of Ford Motor Company.
In the first seven months of 2009, Accord ranked number one in terms of sales, which climbed 6% to 96,033 cars, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).
Camry took the second place with sales of 85,782 ones, inching down 3%. Following are New Teana, Passat New Lingyu, Buick New Regal, and Magotan, whose sales hit 56,643, 57,676, 42,987 and 35,148 cars respectively.
In July, Dongfeng Nissan's sales reached 53,083 vehicles, which ranked number three among counterparts, citing the data released by the China National Passenger Vehicle Association (CNPVA).
The sales of its New Teana, New Sylphy, Tiida and Livina all surpassed 10,000 vehicles. In detail, New Sylphy witnessed sales of 10,198 vehicles in the month, swelling 253.5% from a year earlier and rising 22.5% from a month earlier.
The brand further consolidated its status in the segmented market, not only leaving Satigar and Octavia behind, but also overtaking Civic and challenging Corolla.
However, with the promotion of new sedan models by European and US automakers, Japanese auto giants face severer competitions. When foreign carmakers adjust their product portfolios in China, they are unanimously eyeing the medium- and high-grade sedan market.
Although Accord still led the market with sales of 16,036, the figure slipped 7%. Meanwhile, Passat Lingyu of SVW surged 123% to 9,213. In August, Skoda Superb hit the market, further boosting the company's sales.
As to Shanghai GM, it has taken the third place in the medium- and high-grade sedan market. Its Buick New Regal and Buick New LaCrosse witnessed sales of 11,007, including 6,000 for Buick New Regal in the first month of its debut.
