Ford to introduce new EcoBoost engines to all Ford cars
In response to growing interest among Chinese consumers for affordable and fuel efficient technology, Ford will launch two new products in China in 2010; its new EcoBoost engine and the GETRAG-Ford PowerShift, a six-speed double clutch automatic transmission.
The EcoBoost is a family of 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder engines.
In a statement sent to Automotive News China, Changan Ford Mazda Automobile Co. says it intends to release its EcoBoost engine across its range of Ford vehicles in China.
"It's a key strategy for Changan Ford, and we would like to apply it to the whole product line-up. We are still in the process of deciding on which model will be the first to use this technology, and will keep you informed of our final decision," says Changan Ford.
EcoBoost engines are smaller in size than regular engines and feature direct injection and turbocharging. When combined with advanced transmissions such as the GETRAG-Ford PowerShift they can increase efficiency by 20% and reduce CO2 emissions by 15% with no loss of power, Ford says.
In its China Automotive Monthly report for November 2009, J.D. Power's Automotive Resources Asia predicts Ecoboost engines will enable Ford to increase its competitiveness and possibly benefit from government tax cuts.
GETRAG-Ford PowerShift is a six-speed double-clutch transmission combining the dynamics of a manual gearbox with the convenience automatic transmissions. The PowerShift transmission is built by GETRAG-Ford Transmissions GmbH, a 50-50 joint venture between GETRAG and Ford.
"We're planning the introduction of our EcoBoost engine technology in 2010, as well as other fuel efficient technologies, such as the PowerShift transmission, which we believe will meet the China market's requirements," says Robert Graziano, Chairman and CEO of Ford Motor China in a statement released last week at the Guangzhou auto show.
