CHINESE AUTOMAKERS LAUNCH 89 NEW MODELS IN H1

Chinese automakers have launched 89 new models of cars during the first half of 2009, marking new record for China's auto industry.

The unprecedented launching has sharpened automakers' competitive edges and bolstered auto demand.

The new models include 73 car models, nine SUV models, six MPV models and one crossover model, according to Zhu Yiping, assistant secretary general of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

Among the 73 car models, only about ten are all-new models while the remainders are modifications. And only two of the nine SUV models are all-new.

Over 40 of the 89 new models bear domestic brand insignias, suggesting that China's homegrown automakers have made a large progress during the half year.

Chinese automakers are expected to launch more than 50 new models during the year's second half.
