W. Europe will get Dacia van and pickup

Renault will soon begin selling low-cost Logan vans and pickup trucks manufactured by its Romanian unit Dacia across western Europe.

Originally, the French carmaker had not planned to sell the van and pickup in western Europe because they could undercut demand for the Renault Kangoo.

Now Renault has decided that its low-cost Logan strategy could be valid in western Europe's competitive light commercial vehicle sector.

It will seek to sell the van and pickup to self-employed workers, shopkeepers and trades people.

Sales launched in Switzerland November 24. Other Western European markets will follow by the end of next month.

The Logan van will compete with similar products from Fiat, PSA/Peugeot-Citroen other carmakers, while the pickup will be a rival to the Fiat Strada, the only small pickup sold in Europe.

Dacia has sold more than 12,000 units of its car-derived van in Romania and Bulgaria since its February 2007 launch. It also sold 4,000 units of the small Logan pickup in these two countries, plus Turkey, since March 2008.
