Luxury car crossovers expected to revive sales
Cadillac executives say the 2010 SRX is aimed squarely at Lexus' RX350, also revised for 2010. Unlike more sporty rivals like Acura's MDX, the RX350 takes the middle ground with softer ride and handling characteristics. Cadillac dumped the third seating row that was offered in its current SRX when designing the new version. In doing so, the General Motors luxury brand conforms to the format established by virtually all its competitors.
Boasting the longest and widest body in the class, the XC60 commands the most cargo space behind its second row seat and caters for its occupants in a style that will pleasantly surprise newcomers to the category. While the Lexus RX350 interior takes the brand's typical finely detailed wood and leather approach, the Volvo cabin adopts a suitably Swedish character, with subdued but sophisticated materials and design.
We can expect the Cadillac SRX to lean more toward the sporty end of the spectrum when it comes to driving feel, which is also where the Volvo finds itself. The XC60 is fun to drive, with precise steering and well damped body roll, two factors that hopefully will be shared by more crossovers in the market. Like the SRX, Volvo's competitor is powered by a turbocharged V-6 and performance is strong and confident.
Volvo leads in safety features
These days most luxury models, whatever the type, offer a slew of safety features but Volvo, as you might expect, goes the extra mile. The $37,200 XC60 showcases the brand's latest system called City Safety, which helps avoid or reduce the severity of low speed collisions.
Volvo says that 75 percent of all accidents happen at speeds at or below 19 mph and in half of these incidents, the brakes were not used by the driver. City Safety uses a laser sensor in the windshield to detect a vehicle in front and automatically applies the brakes if a collision is likely. Look for other brands to step up their safety efforts in the future.
The promising aspect of all this activity in the small luxury crossover sector is that shoppers looking a convincing blend of style and practicality in a 'right-sized' package are going to having a broader, better choice than ever before.
