Global auto majors banking on India
Japanese automaker Suzuki and South Korea’s Hyundai Motors have successfully transformed their Indian operations into small-car manufacturing hub. Following the success, global auto firms like Nissan, Honda, Toyota, General Motors and Renault are planning to manufacture their small cars from India, for the international markets.
A dozen new mini and compact cars slated to be launched in the international markets would be manufactured in India in the next two-three years. This development would be supported by the incessant demand for smaller cars despite the global slowdown.
Toyota is putting up a new manufacturing plant in Bangalore and will launch its new hatchback in late 2010.Besides Toyota, Nissan’s Micra will roll out from the upcoming green field facility in Chennai by 2010. Honda will launch an exclusive small car to be made in India.
General Motors will also come up with a small car, Chevrolet Beat after the success of Spark.
Renault, Europe’s second largest car maker, is developing an all new small car with the Pune-based Bajaj Auto to come up with an ULC or an ultra low cost car.
