Fiat to launch low-cost car in India

Fiat, the renowned Italian automaker is planning to launch a low-cost car in India by 2012. The proposal has come as a clear understanding of the company’s buyer preferences in India.

Mr Silverio Bonfiglioli, Chief Operating Officer, Fiat Group Automobiles International informed that the car would be placed at the bottom of the B segment that includes Santro, Indica and Alto.

The low-cost car intended for India will roll out of the Ranjangaon plant near Pune, which is part of a 50:50 joint venture with Tata Motors. It is estimated that by 2012, the production here would reach 200,000 cars of which the Fiat product line-up will include the Palio, the recently launched Linea, the Grande Punto scheduled to debut soon and, the proposed low-cost car.

Sources reveal that Tata Motors' own range could account for nearly half of this number which translates into 100,000 units. However, the proportion could change for either company depending on market reaction to the products concerned.
