Support grows to aid auto industry
Emanuel and another aide, John Podesta, co-chairman of Obama's transition effort, said Sunday Obama advisers may seek new legislation to help the industry. 'There's quite clearly ... a short-term credit crunch and I think that we're looking at whether additional legislation needs to be made,' Podesta said on CNN's 'Late Edition.' House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid sent a letter Saturday to President Bush, calling on him to release some of the $700 billion for auto aid. The letter came a day after General Motors Corp. announced billions in new losses and said it might run out of cash in 2009. Ford Motor Co. also is burning through money rapidly. President Bush and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson have resisted the idea, but the companies and Michigan lawmakers hope top-level congressional requests will placate them. Aid to the car companies got bipartisan support from two key lawmakers as well. On NBC's 'Meet the Press,' Rep. Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., a member of the House leadership, and Sen. Mel Martinez, R-Fla., each seemed supportive of using some of the $700 billion package to help the carmakers.
