Commentary: Millen should never have been hired

'Once the season is over, we will undergo a thorough and comprehensive evaluation of our entire football operation and put together a plan that we believe will transform this team into a winner,' Ford said. Long-suffering fans should hold Ford to that. With all due respect to Lewand and Meyhew, they are a part of the old, the brain trust that didn't work, couldn't win. No matter the cost, Ford has to deliver the best and brightest out there. Hopefully, Ford will call the NFL and ask for help. The last thing we want is a repeat of the Millen hire. No experience, no thanks. When you think about it, Millen -- whose team was off to a 0-3 start -- never should have gotten the job in the first place. That's the saddest part of this horror story that finally ended for Lions fans. Seemingly, the only thing they have been waiting for longer than Millen getting canned was another postseason victory. And it didn't look as if that was going to happen as long as Millen was at the helm. For all the ability Millen had as a multi-Super Bowl winner in his playing career, he was a fraud -- a 31-84 record -- when it came to building a team. Millen, a Fox broadcaster when hired, talked a good game. He sounded like the smartest man when he broke down players on TV. He told you who could play and who couldn't. What most people missed is that it's easier to determine the better players once they're at the pro level. Being able to determine which college players can move to the next level is the hardest job. Clearly, Millen had no clue. Worse, he never asked for help. Sadly, Ford is to blame for letting his personal feelings get in the way of business. Even if he wanted to give Millen a chance, that's one thing. But to ignore his shortcomings and continue to show support for a man who failed in his gig was unacceptable. Ford finally listened to his son, Bill Ford Jr., and did what needed to be done. Millen's firing puts an end to perhaps the worst run as a general manager in any professional sport. Ford Sr. now must deliver the best possible candidate. The fans here deserve it after what they've been through.
