Euro Focus family is worth the wait
It may be 2010 before we get the Ford Fiesta in America. After that, the feast of Euro Fords begins in earnest. In 2012, the next generation of Ford's European C-segment cars--the Focus and all of its derivatives--comes to the United States. Why do we have to wait that long? Because federalizing the current cars would be halfhearted and expensive. With 20/20 hindsight, it's easy to say Ford should have designed the current C-segment cars for America, but it didn't. Today, Ford can't afford the monetary expense while developing all-new models, nor can it risk putting a hasty bit of patchwork in the showrooms. That didn't stop us from sampling the current generation of the Focus and its derivatives while we were in Europe to meet the new Fiesta. Here's a quick report card for the C-segment cars:--Focus ST: This is the boy racer--a screamer--that begs to be driven flat-out. We'd give it five full helmets if we could have it now! --Kuga: A small crossover that will make the Volkswagen Tiguan yesterday's news. It has nice ride height and is seriously tossable, without feeling too high-centered. --Focus: This is the wonder car that started the whole conversation of "Why don't we get this?" --C-Max: A natural top placed on the Focus platform adds function and fun. It's ideal for a young family or as a light-duty carryall.
