Volvo and Volkswagen Woo Skittish Buyers With Free Maintenance Programs
IRVINE, California/HERNDON, Virginia — Knowing full well that cash-strapped car buyers are pinching every penny, Volvo Cars of North America said this week it will offer complimentary factory scheduled maintenance on its 2009 vehicles. Earlier, Volkswagen of America announced a no-charge 'Carefree Maintenance Program' on its 2009 lineup.Volvo said its new program covers the first three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. VW's program is identical, covering three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. The VW program kicked off with the introduction of the Tiguan earlier this year and continues with the upcoming Routan minivan.Volvo said its program covers such things as oil and filter changes, cabin filter replacement, fluid level top-offs and a check of the vehicle's onboard diagnostic system. Volkswagen said its program covers 10K, 20K and 30K checks for all 2009 VWs. 'Since all current Volkswagens use synthetic oil, a 5K oil change is no longer necessary,' VW pointed out in a statement. What this means to you: Expect other automakers to follow suit on this trend, as yet another way to get buyers in the tent. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
