August Car sales go downhill, two-wheelers continue to grow
The growth of the Passenger Vehicles segment during April – August 2008 was 8.03 percent, which is lower than the growth in April – July 2008 of 10.97 percent. Passenger Cars grew by 5.97 percent, Utility Vehicles by 14.20 percent and Multi Purpose Vehicles by 18.80 percent in this period.
The overall Commercial Vehicles also grew at a slower rate. While the growth rate was 4.92 percent in April – August 2008, it was 8.00 percent in April - July 2008. Medium & Heavy Commercial Vehicles grew at 1.12 percent and Light Commercial Vehicles recorded a growth of 9.51 percent.
Three Wheelers sales decelerated with a negative growth rate of (-) 0.60 percent in April – August 2008. Three Wheelers sales grew by 3.28 percent in April – July 2008. While Passenger Carriers grew by 18.47 percent during April - July 2008, Goods Carriers declined by 31.92 percent.
Two Wheelers registered a growth of 10.75 percent during this period. During April – July 2008, the segment grew at 9.91 percent. Motorcycles and Scooters grew by 11.91 percent and 6.77 percent respectively. Mopeds grew by 4.67 percent. Electric two wheelers segment also grew by 47.55 percent.
Exports
The period from April – August 2008 saw automobile exports registering a growth of 24.28 percent, but not all segments registered positive growth.
Passenger Vehicles and Two Wheelers segment grew by 43.62 and 25.59 percent respectively. Exports of Commercial Vehicles grew marginally at 0.49 percent. Three Wheelers exports declined by 3.63% in this period.
