INGOLSTADT, Germany — Audi on Wednesday said it will roll out a 500-horsepower-plus GT3 version of the R8 'specifically developed for customer use,' starting in autumn 2009. No word on pricing yet, but the German automaker said the car, which meets production-based GT3 regulations, can be 'fielded in numerous national and international race series.''Ever since the R8 was unveiled we've been inundated with enquiries about a race version,' said Wolfgang Ullrich, head of Audi Motorsport, in a statement. 'With the Audi R8 we will offer customers a racing sports car equipped with high-caliber technology and the typical Audi qualities, but which is nevertheless easy to handle.'In line with GT3 regulations, the Audi R8 will get rear-wheel drive. Other details include a six-speed sequential sports gearbox, a modified front end and a large rear wing.
