TURIN, Italy — The Italian automaker announced a new concept van called the Fiat Fiorino Portofino that will be shown beginning August 29 at the Caravan Salon in Dusseldorf, Germany.The quirky design of the vehicle was inspired by open-topped beach cars from the '60s that were built onto Fiat models by Italian coachbuilders. This one is originally based on the Fiat Fiorino, with the doors and roof removed and replaced by a rollbar-like central ring that makes the structure sturdier.The nautical-style interior has wood-finished flooring and a repainted dashboard. Fiat says a covered version will be available at a later stage so the cabin can be protected against the elements.Two engines are available: 1.3-liter and 1.4-liter Multijets, which are further equipped with a special 'traction +' device that will help keep the car in control and on the road. The engines are mated to a Comfort-Matic robotized gearbox and also feature a speed block system that will restrict the top speed of the vehicle.
