Peugeot Announces Fascinating Finalists for Annual Future-Design Competition

PARIS — The fifth annual Peugeot Design Competition has reached the finals, and 30 edgy designs from competitors from around the world are now viewable online. The winning design of a car for 'the metropolises of tomorrow' will be announced at the 2008 Paris Auto Show in October.What's more, the winning design will be produced over the winter for a real-world debut on the Peugeot stand at the Shanghai auto show in April 2009.The competition was launched at the Beijing auto show in April. Designers were told that their projects had to meet standards of 'environmental friendliness, social harmony, interactive mobility and economic efficiency.' Some 2,500 entrants from 95 countries responded. Among the finalists are designers from China, Germany, India and many countries of Eastern Europe.The automaker's Web site allows viewers to vote on their favorite entrants from 30 finalists' designs. The public votes are taken into consideration by a jury that will choose a short list of 10 designs — again viewable online starting September 16 — from which the winner will be selected. Those who vote online are also eligible to win one of 20 Xbox 360 game consoles.What this means to you: Mulling over these designs is a much better late-summer pastime than waiting for the names of vice presidential choices. — Laura Sky Brown, Correspondent
