For Florida car nut, Cruise is cool in more ways than one
Whitter didn't come alone either; he and his pristine 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air two-door sedan came up to the cool blue north with buddies David Chesser and Danny Peterson.
'We got here on Monday and did a lot of tourist stuff, like going to The Henry Ford in Dearborn, the Sloan Museum and we also took a tour of a General Motors truck plant. But the real fun is out here on Woodward.
'It's just great seeing all the cities and all the people pulling together for this event. For car guys like us, this is just amazing.'
Chesser nodded in agreement.
'We have car shows and parades down in Florida, but nothing like this,' Chesser said. 'Plus it's nice and cool up here compared with Florida; the weather here has just been great.'
Whitter, 63, is retired from a trucking company, which gives him lots of time to spend on his favorite hobby: cars.
'I have 18 of them,' Whitter said.
'And yes, I'm still married to the greatest, most understanding woman in the world.'
Whitter keeps his cars in a 30 by 140 foot, two-story, heated and air-conditioned garage.
'And I don't just have cars in there,' Whitter said.
'I also have a complete 1890s barbershop with five chairs, a 1890s cash register and 100-year-old sinks. A friend of mine was retiring and he offered it all to me so I snapped it up.'
Whitter and his buddies are leaving for Florida on Sunday.
I'll bet you a free haircut that they'll be back next year, though.
