Cruise funding holds steady

About half of the total donations came from the cruise's perennial top three sponsors, MotorCity Casino Hotel, General Motors Corp., and Eaton Corp.

Sponsorship money covers costs such as clean-up and public safety in the nine host communities as well as marketing and promotional such as the official cruise Web site.

The cruise attracted several new sponsors this year including Guardian Alarm in Southfield and Farmer's Insurance, according to Tanner. Both will have exhibits near Woodward and 13 Mile. Flagstar Bank, for example, signed a three-year contract. It will sponsor the Hot Rod Racers trophy in the Dream Show contest, a juried exposition at Northwood Shopping Center at 13 Mile Road and Woodward.

Securing donation money was 'not an easy task in this economy,' Tanner said. 'There's probably never been a harder time to go out and attract new sponsors.'

'Value-addeds' like trophy sponsorship packages, banner advertisements on the Dream Cruise Web site and exhibits with high-traffic display space helped interest corporate sponsors, Tanner said.

Sponsorships generally run from $5,000 to more than $100,000. Small business sponsorships start at $550.

GM, the only major automaker that gives money directly to Dream Cruise organizers, will be on hand this year for its 13th cruise. It maintained its standard donation level but cut behind-the-scenes costs by 50 percent, according to Bill O'Neill, executive director of GM's global communications.

'Although we have reduced significantly the total costs for the program, they come from areas the public will not notice,' O'Neill said.

Measures include reducing the number of automotive displays along the cruise route, setting up fewer tents, and sending out fewer invitations to the company's Dream Cruise party.

At GM's two display sites in Birmingham and Royal Oak, the company will exhibit classic vehicles owned by employees, retirees, and car club members. Foregoing this year's display of newer models will 'cut costs tremendously,' O'Neill said.

Chrysler LLC's Dream Cruise spending is 'comparable' to last year's, said spokeswoman Ann Smith. The company will display vintage and concept cars at 13 Mile Road and Woodward Avenue and host a live band.

Ford Motor Co. also said it's expanding its cruise involvement and plans to host the country's largest exhibit of Ford Mustangs this weekend. The display of new and classic cars will spread over a mile along 9 Mile Road.
