Ford Mustang AV8R Raises $500,000 for Charity

OSHKOSH, Wisconsin — A one-of-a-kind , dubbed AV8R, has been auctioned at AirVenture Oshkosh 2008, raising $500,000 for charity.

The annual Oshkosh show, sponsored by the Experimental Aircraft Association, is often described as the world's largest aviation event, drawing half a million enthusiasts to view more than 10,000 aircraft.

Ford, the exclusive automotive partner of the Oshkosh show through 2011, created the one-off Mustang AV8R (described in the literature as 'Build #1 of 1') specifically for the Gathering of Eagles charity auction, which benefits EAA youth education programs. The AV8R was designed and developed by an in-house team led by Doug Gaffka, Mustang chief designer, and Paul Randle, Mustang chief nameplate engineer, supported by Ford Racing.

The car is powered by a supercharged 4.6-liter V8 developing 400 horsepower. Ford Racing supplied the tuned exhaust system and provided a handling pack that bundles performance dampers, lowering springs, a stabilizer bar and a strut-tower brace.

The AV8R features the new Webasto glass roof that debuts on the 2009 Mustang, as well as a satin-finish 'aviation-inspired' matte paint scheme with gloss-black accents. Other highlights include a Mustang Bullitt grille and shift knob, unique front and rear fascias, 18-inch painted alloy wheels, an AV8R faux gas cap, star-in-circle insignias and a cockpit trimmed in distressed 'bomber jacket' leather.

Incidentally, the winning bidder gets a car autographed by a number of celebrities attending the Oshkosh show, including Harrison Ford, Edsel B. Ford II, Jack Roush and Carroll Shelby.
