UK: Mercedes launches C-class wagon

                                 Mercedes-Benz has launched its redesigned right hand drive C-Class estate (wagon) beginning in the UK.
 
A Daimler UK spokesman told just-auto both RHD saloon (sedan) and wagon models are now being sourced from Germany; the previous-generation sedans came from Daimler's East London plant in South Africa.
 
Better packaging and overall length increased by 55mm and width by 42mm mean the new Estate is considerably more spacious throughout than its predecessor, the automaker said.
 
Mercedes reckons the wagon's luggage capacity of up to 1,500 litres is "one of the largest load compartments in the segment" with features for easy loading and safe transportation including, as standard, the 'Easy Pack' automatic power tailgate which opens and closes at the push of a button.
 
The single-action folding rear seats, split 1/3-2/3, collapse to create a virtually flat load floor measuring around 1.8 metres long and up to 1.2 metres wide.
 
Luggage capacity expands from 485 litres behind the seats - 690 litres to the roof - to 1,500 litres (loaded to roof level, VDA measuring method) with the rear seats folded down, an increase of up to 146 litres compared with the previous model.
 
The UK range offers eight engines, all updated to boost power and improve fuel economy by as much as 12%.
 
For example, the popular C200 CDI can now achieve 47.1 mpg (compared with the 41.5 mpg of its predecessor) on the official EU combined test cycle, and run for up to 600 miles (1,000km) on a single 66-litre tank of fuel.
 
Like the saloon (sedan), the estate is the first car in its market segment to be awarded with an Environmental Certificate, which confirms its environmentally-focused development conforms to the international ISO standard.
 
New safety innovations include 'Pre-Safe' and adaptive brake systems, seven airbags and crash-responsive 'Neck-Pro' front head restraints as standard. The saloon was recently awarded a five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating and the as yet untested estate shares the same equipment.
 
The estate shares the saloon's three trim and equipment packages: SE, Elegance and Sport. Each has a unique radiator grille; the Sport has a prominent three-point star in the centre.
UK deliveries start on 1 March.
