Geneva Motor Show puts green technologies on display

Automakers are seeing green at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show ¡ª but not the kind of green they can spend. Instead, they seeing "green," environmental green, that is, and putting an impressive array of earth-friendly technology on display for the public to view.

The show, which is being held in the PALExpo exposition center March 6-16, features more than 50 new product previews, covering just about every segment of the auto industry. Highlights include a $2500 hatchback developed by Indian automaker Tata and the $2.3 million Bugatti Veyron Fbr, developed in a joint venture with the luxury goods maker, Hermes.

Some of the most important unveilings of the show include the Ford Fiesta, an unexpectedly up-market subcompact that will make its way, in four-door form, to the U.S. in 2010, and which showcases the automaker's new, global product strategy.

Infiniti weighs in with its all-new FX50 SUV/crossover, which also serves as the preview product for the luxury maker's new European operations.

Mercedes-Benz rolls into Geneva with the all-new SL, including the beefy SL63 AMG sports car. But while performance and luxury are always popular at this Swiss show, even the meanest machines are going green. British maker Bentley announced that it will slash CO2 emissions and introduce a new powertrain that could boost mileage on some models by up to 40 percent by 2012.
