NETHERLANDS/JAPAN: Mitsubishi moving production of PSA EU-bound SUVs
Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) is to transfer production of all EU-bound Outlander SUV derivatives it supplies to PSA Peugeot Citroen from its Mizushima Plant (Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture) in Japan, where they are currently built, to its European production hub, Netherlands Car (NedCar) in Born, The Netherlands.
The transfer takes place in January 2009 and follows a similar move - announced last September - to shift production of EU-bound Outlander versions to Born later this year.
Production of Mitsubishi-badged Outlanders begins in Holland next August, Mitsubishi Motors Europe spokesman Daniel Nacass confirmed on Thursday (27 March), with output of the Peugeot 4007 and Citroen C-Crosser derivatives for PSA commencing in January 2009.
"This decision was driven by MMC's desire to optimise its production capacities according to demand for each model, minimising missed sales opportunities," MMC said in a statement.
The 100% Mitsubishi Motors-owned NedCar plant - once home to an MMC/Volvo joint venture - currently builds only the Mitsubishi Colt compact car line for European markets.
In parallel, production of non EU-bound PSA models will be transferred to MMC's Nagoya Plant (Okazaki, Aichi Prefecture), from November, MMC added.
These models are currently made in the Mizushima plant.
