Toyota Europe plans 18 new low-CO2 cars

Toyota will launch 18 new or revised models in Europe by the end of next year to reduce its CO2 emissions.

"Each model will offer improved fuel efficiency," Toyota Motor Europe President Tadashi Arashima told the Automotive News Europe Congress.

Arashima said vehicles emitting less than 140 grams of CO2 per kilometer accounted for 30 percent of Toyota sales last year, compared with 25 percent in 2006.

By the end of 2009, they will account for half of Toyota sales in Europe.

Last year, Toyota's average CO2 emissions were nearly 149g/km, according to market researcher JATO Dynamics.

The European Commission wants average CO2 emissions from Europe's new-car fleet to be cut to 120g/km by 2012 from abut 160g/km now. If the Commission's proposal is approved, Toyota's target would be 127g/km.

Arashima said automakers will face increased costs to meet tougher European environmental legislation, but it is soon to say how much of the increased costs will be passed to the consumer.

He said Toyota will look at what other carmakers will do in terms of passing extra costs to consumer and adjust its pricing accordingly.
