Toyota recall on ice worries for brakes
Toyota is recalling some 95,700 cars and crossovers sold in the US after discovering that icing in cold temperatures could impair the braking system. It is the automaker's second major recall this week following news that it is recalling nearly 690,000 vehicles built and sold in China by its joint ventures there.
The US recall affects 2009 and 2010 models of the Corolla and the 2008 and 2009 models of the Scion xD, all equipped with 1.8-litre engines and registered in 19 cold weather states.
Toyota said it found that if the vehicle was operated in extremely low temperatures, there was a possibility that condensed moisture from the positive crankcase ventilation port could seep into the brake system vacuum port and freeze.
The accumulation of ice could gradually decrease the vacuum power assist to the brakes "and lead to lengthened vehicle stopping distances," it said.
Dealers will fit a new intake air connector to fix the problem.
The Chinese recall involves certain Camry, Corolla, Vios and Yaris cars made in the last four years. Japanese supplier Tokai Rika said it supplied the defective window switch system that caused the problem which stems from excessive lubrication that could cause the electric window switch control to short circuit and catch fire.
